Export your data

One button in Settings downloads everything you've written as portable markdown and JSON.

All documentation articles

Everything you've written, yours to take — anytime. We make leaving easy on purpose: an archive you're free to walk away with is an archive you can trust with your life's writing.

How to export

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In the Export your data card, tap Export your data.
  3. A zip file downloads: sanddune-export-YYYY-MM-DD.zip.

What's inside

Item Contents
notes/ Every transcription as a plain markdown file, one per note, named by date and title (2026-03-14-morning-pages.md)
notes.json Each note's metadata — title, date written, upload date, word count, star, notebook memberships
timelines.json Every Timeline question with all node titles, answers, and dates
README A plain-text explanation of the export's contents

Markdown is the most durable format we could choose: readable in any text editor, importable into Obsidian or any PKM tool, still openable in thirty years.

What's not inside (yet)

Original note photos. Each is downloadable individually from its note in the viewer; bulk image export is on the roadmap, and both the export README and the Privacy Policy disclose this. Your photos remain safely stored regardless — this is about the zip's contents, not about what's kept.

Limits

Export runs once per hour — it packages your entire archive each time. It never costs quota and works on every plan, including Free.
